Start with Hawaiʻi County's wastewater maps to see whether a sewer line appears near the property. A map result is only an initial check. The County must confirm whether service is available, and a licensed professional may need to evaluate whether a connection is practical for the site.
Where should you begin?
Search the County wastewater records and sewer network maps using the property address and tax map key (TMK). Note the map you used, the date of the search, and any nearby line or facility shown.
Map distance alone cannot confirm that the property can connect. The records may not show current capacity, a usable service lateral, legal access, elevation constraints, or easements.
What should the County confirm?
Ask the County of Hawaiʻi Wastewater Division whether the parcel is in a sewer service area and whether a main or service lateral is available. Provide the full TMK, street address, and the map reference from your search.
Also ask what the County needs before it can make a final determination. Depending on the property, that review may address an application, connection fees, capacity, easements, plumbing work, or inspection requirements.
What makes a connection feasible?
A nearby line may still require substantial work. A review of the property should consider the route from the building to the sewer, changes in elevation, roads and utilities, access rights, and whether an extension or pumping equipment would be needed.
The old cesspool must also be closed as required. Ask which closure records should stay with the property documents.
What if sewer service is unavailable?
A Hawaiʻi licensed civil engineer must prepare and submit a design for a new individual wastewater system. The final system depends on the property, wastewater flow, soils, setbacks, and Department of Health requirements.
